With the Pacific Ocean on two sides, it's not surprising that UC-Santa Barbara is strong in marine biology. It is also a powerhouse in solid state physics--Professor David Gross was one of the 2004 Nobel Laureates in physics. Other strong programs include engineering and chemistry. Of the 17,500 students, eight percent of the men and ten percent of the women go Greek.
