Willa Wants to (Gulp) Walk
The town of Fourwheel is under a curse: everyone must drive cars. Nobody has walked for almost 20 years, which makes it difficult for Henny, the duck, Marsu the opossum, and Sabrina, the flying squirrel. All of their friends have been killed by cars. Sabrina discovers that there is still time to save Fourwheel forever if they can get a girl to walk to school. Meanwhile, Suburb Witch, Urban Witch and Baby Witch are plotting to get the rest of the towns (Orlando, Detroit, etc.) so that no one will be able to walk anywhere. And if they can stall the animals, they will have power over Fourwheel forever. Willa and William, having grown up in Fourwheel, have never been out of their cars. They discover the letter written on a piece of bark by Sabrina, and Willa tries to persuade her parents to let her walk to school. This absurd suggestion, (“I Want to Walk”) is greeted with outrage from her father, Mr. Wenchel. But he finally relents and they prepare to walk. Meanwhile, Baby Witch puts a curse on them so that William sprains his ankle. They are further slowed by Mr. Bunswick, the scientist studying pedestrians, who is excited to capture an endangered species he has studied all his life but never actually seen—a pedestrian. In the end, the witches are foiled, Willa touches the Wheeliewood school, and Fourwheel is made safe for pedestrians. (“Pedestrians all Hail!”)
